Typically Wiley paints young black men from around the world in his work. He claims that he does this to celebrate their (and his own) culture and to give the spotlight to the oppressed or discriminated. To select these participants in his work he often just plucks them off the street and asks them to be his subject. He has done these portraits of people from his home of New York and from the far away, tiny villages of Africa. He also often chooses his patterned backgrounds by going to a local market and selecting multiple textiles or design and pairing it with the right subject. This use of local textiles and designs helps the culture of the area influence his work and shine through against the often placid or calm subjects. In my opinion Wiley does a good job of taking an old style and adding his own contemporary, exciting twist. I also love his use of almost mundane or calm subjects on such loud, abstract backgrounds to bring a new flavor to the old style of portrait painting.
When I began creating my photo-montage on photo shop I learned that though using imagery that does not belong to me is illegal for profit, because I'm using it for education and my own artistic ventures it is okay. if I do decide to use imagery that does not belong to me, though, then I can face legal problems concerning copyright infringement. I personally chose to use imagery that was not my own, shown in my use of the sailboat, longboard, picnic blanket, duck, soccer ball, and other images.
My photo-montage is a representation of what reminds me of home and is taking place at the beach. For example Sailing and kites remind me of home because every summer we go kite flying and sailing with family. Additionally long-boarding, the food and the soccer ball are all things that remind me of my house because they are things I enjoy at home. In my photo-montage I used quick-selection, marquee, lasso, edge refining, layer mask, and color/lighting editing tools to edit the images in my project. In my photo-montage I found the quick selection tool most helpful because it allowed me to easily and quickly pull objects out of images for use in my project. If I were to start over my project I would choose a photo with a more dramatic and distinguishable fore, middle, and background because I feel that my photo is too flat. Besides that I am happy with my image. Thank you. |
